My most memorable moment in the book was after Johnny died, after escaping half-dead from a flaming church, after saving children from it. He told Ponyboy to "stay gold", which is what the movie is all about. After Johnny's death, Dally cant handle seeing that someone that he called his little brother had died, so he went knocking off a grocery store and pointing an empty gun at the cops. As a result, Dally is shot to death. He basically committed suicide, realizing that Johnny was the only thing that he ever loved.
