Character Analysis - Sarmad Muhammad

Johnny Cade

Johnny was beaten by his father and ignored by his mother since he was young, he stuck around only because he is the gang's pet, "everyone's little brother." Johnny reminds Pony of a "little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers." Johnny was beaten up really badly be the Socs. Since then he has carried a knife for his own protection and has become even more slick and sneaky. Johnny is the youngest in the gang, along with Ponyboy and also the most sensitive.

Darrel Curtis

Darrel has been taking care of the family ever since Mr. and Mrs. Curtis died in a car accident. A judge allows the brothers to stay together under Darry's supervision, as long as they stay out of trouble. Rather than being a normal teenager and enjoying every moment of life, Darry has to go to work in order to keep the three together and Pony in school. He has had to give up a lot and has become an adult too fast. Darry is a big and powerful young man.

Ponyboy Curtis

Ponyboy Curtis is the narration in this story about his experience seeing three young men die. Pony is a good student, a track star, and a greaser. He is an orphan, which brings him trouble. In addition, he is a solitary, sensitive boy who likes movies, watching sunsets, and reading.

Dallas Winston

Dallas is the real character of the gang, Dally was arrested his first time at the age of ten. He spent three years on the "wild side" of New York. He is the most dangerous member of greasers. Not even Darry wants to get into a fight with him, but he is still a part of their greaser "family." The local police have a large file on him, and he has just gotten out of jail at the beginning of the story.

Most Memorable Moment - Sarmad Muhammad

My most memorable moment in the book was after Johnny died, after escaping half-dead from a flaming church, after saving children from it. He told Ponyboy to "stay gold", which is what the movie is all about. After Johnny's death, Dally cant handle seeing that someone that he called his little brother had died, so he went knocking off a grocery store and pointing an empty gun at the cops. As a result, Dally is shot to death. He basically committed suicide, realizing that Johnny was the only thing that he ever loved.

First Impression - Sarmad Muhammad

Ponyboy Curtis is a fourteen year old Greaser who lives on the East Side of Tulsa with his two brothers Darrel and Sodapop. He is a lost and dreamy sort of person who loves to read, draw, and watch sunsets. He is pretty quiet and shy, but he can still take care of himself. Ponyboy is different from other greasers. He doesn't fight for fun, or to show off, he fights because he has to, not because he wants to. He enjoys reading and watching movies. He does not seem like the type of character who is evil and mean, neither does he seem like a gang member. He helped Johnny save the children from the burning church before Johnny died. At first I didn't think he was a gang member because of how his character acted, but after I got to know he was a gang affiliated character.
